The Vancouver Youth Jazz Orchestra (VYJO) is a free, auditioned big band program for BC students in grades 8-12. Over six weeks each spring, up to 21 young musicians come together to rehearse, learn, and perform under the mentorship of members of the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra (VJO).

Unlike many youth ensembles, every section of the band from trumpet and trombone to saxophones and rhythm section is guided by a dedicated professional mentor, giving students direct access to some of Vancouver’s leading jazz artists. Participants gain invaluable insight into musicianship, improvisation, ensemble playing, and the realities of a career in music.

Beyond the music, students build lasting relationships with like-minded peers and make meaningful connections within Vancouver’s professional jazz community, helping to bridge the gap between student and professional life.

The program culminates in a featured performance at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, giving participants the opportunity to share the stage and showcase their talents as part of one of Vancouver’s premier jazz events.

The 2026 VYJO performance happened on July 5th at Performance Works, co-presented by Coastal Jazz and Vancouver Community College (VCC).

The 2027 VYJO auditions will take place in April 2027.
